CRITICS

Martina Cavallarin IF YOU PROCEED BY TRIAL AND DOUBT, I PROCEED BY TRIAL AND DOUBT If you proceed by trial and doubt, I proceed by trial and doubt. So I approach my writing (critically/analytically?) and unwind it in chapters, apparently unrelated, apparently linked to your work by incipits corresponding to the titles. Apparently, each chapter closes, then I insert the sources from time to time. Apparently, I copy and paste. Apparently, they are in a state of motion. Apparently, I attempt and inevitably fail. TO BE KEPT IMMERSED IN NOTHINGNESS, REALLY IT IS NOT THE VASES FULL OF YOU THAT MAKE YOU STABLE. THE THREE GREAT LIGHTS, TOMORROW THE STARS is a project that faces the risk of following what the four artists feel: the presence in front of the danger of not be there. Gilles Deleuze writes about Carmelo Bene's interest in what is a minor or major character: "The Becoming, the movement, the speed, the whirlwind, are in the middle. The interesting is in the middle, what happens in the middle (au milieu). The medium is not media, it is instead an excess. Things grow in the middle. This was the idea of Virginia Woolf. And the medium does not mean at all to be in one's own time, to belong in one's own time, to be historical; on the contrary. It is why the most different times communicate." (1.) In an age where everything is known, discovered and reported, there is an important current of research that innervates itself in Contemporary Art and goes in the direction of the anthropological - scientific - exploratory method. It's a current that twists and turns in the track of the mapping of intellectual and experiential nomadism. That feeds itself of incursions into territories and regions with a particular methodology of investigation and summarising. " A fantasy only can support everyone who wants to be non-zimbels of the structure, and that's it: their life is nothing more than a journey. The life is that of the viator. They are those whom they say, in this world, we are foreigners."(2) What interests us is "fiction as a mean to grasp reality", the use of such fiction as a vehicle and travel as a method of diagramming. As a viator, this research inhabits a border area containing the work, the dominant configurations of our imaginary - expedition, wandering, and dislocation -. It's a matter of working on perceptual differences that function both as medians and for minimal deviations. What implies the research that moves in this direction, which by definition is relational and experiential, is the need to stay within a process, an ultra-reality consisting of space and time understood as schemes that serve to measure the scope where things happen and their becoming; and at the same time the entities that can be catalogued, documented, mapped. 1. Carmelo Bene, Gilles Deleuze, Overlaps. Quodlibet, 2002, p. 92. Original title of text by Gilles Deleuze: Un manifeste de moins, translation by Jean Paul Manganaro. Keeping a line in constant alert for the conditions in which they carry out the investigation, the artist uses a work plan that provides a procedure for clues, in the middle zone, between a place and another place, within physical and temporal trajectories. This artwork operates and moves beyond historical coincidences and cultural incidences, competing in telluric high-density fields with capillary filigrees that the artist weaves and textures with care, in an infinitesimal dimension, that same line that only has been thought that I like to identify with the entity that Marcel Duchamp (1.) calls the inframince. It's the small interval between two things, the duration and the geographical coordinates that scientifically cannot be measured or distinguished and between which failure and loss are abandoned and amplified. This inframince space is approximately similar to the fractal space, even if its trend is perhaps less repetitive. It can be told only by giving examples, based on a codified and certified mnemonic function that leads us to approach a more extensible dimension, poetic or surgical, of contemporary artistic practice. What Didymos deals with is essentially the zone of contamination, the hybrid that loses the schematic grid of institutionalized perception, rising in evidence with growth in calibrated and regulated chemical doses, the non-emphasizing event driven by archiving, recording, codes to be used and artistic protocols to be legislated. As Deleuze explains, "between the two bends runs the infra-bend, the Zwiefalt, the bending of the two floors, the inseparable zone that acts as a zipper or stitching.” (2.) 1. Didymos'need is the sublimation by the transformation. It is a practice that reminds us that in its most genuine and opaque core Art is a subversion, an identification of alternatives and, certainly, a social space whose doors are open from the personal and restless gaze of the author. And so the intention and the invention reside in the overtaking that brings to light what is repressed or removed in time and space, establishing through the appearance of the created work unexpected correspondences between perception and thought. The intention is to show in which way Art always actively triggers a process. The invention is the constant appearance of the world in its entropic and inevitable destruction and recomposition of its order, of its practicability. The attempt is made all in this state of motion, the error happens and the failure is grafted. "I claim the right to opacity for all", wrote Édouard Glissant, a French writer who died in 2011 and to whom we owe, among other things, important essays dedicated to the positive role of opacity in the relationship between people and cultures. Transparency, understood from this point of view, is an instrument of domination and levelling. Glissant writes, "Transparency no longer appears at the bottom of the mirror in which Western humanity reflected the world in its image; at the bottom of the mirror there is now opacity, a whole silt deposited by peoples, fertile silt, but, actually, uncertain, unexplored, still very often denied or obfuscated, of which we can not live the insistent presence". 1. In the open space of Art, the application of Didymos to guerrilla warfare is a practice of relationship, exchange and expansion of error, identification and assertion of presence, movement as an action to escape entropy. For Didymos it is necessary to manifest their self through the sociable and perturbing intercession of Art, to affine methods, to graft intelligence and to connect the instruments at one's disposal. Didymos are ready for their effort rejecting apathy, they are ready to accept the fear of losing something because their works contain everything they need. And they possess rhizomatic identities, resilient organisms and the coherence of obsession. For the artistic duo it is a matter of coordinating and making room for a new, dystonic order of things, and for the best and most poetic of harmonies; it is necessary to proceed with a new mental setting by working on what Lyotard calls waste, impertinence. In this universe with an inconstant climate, the difference that Didymos applies creates that gap that arouses the work; and it is nothing more than an impertinence, a physiological necessity and such” physiology of impertinence" is the most extraordinary of the possible imperfections. It is Art and Life together. 1. Jean - François Lyotard, DISCORSO, FIGURA, Mimesis Edizioni, 2008 Tomorrow the starS contains the nostalgia for tomorrow, the vision of what is perhaps no longer there. The beginning or maybe the end of something. The epiphany of the refined and complex work of Didymos manifests itself from the detailed and conscious study of the History of Art to the search for a personal conceptual path; to the implementation of a repeated and obsessive practice of "making" that in the materials and in the expansion of error reveal the concretization of the process. The poetics that is refined in the open space of art are the basis of any research in the field of Visual Art and beyond, but in the case of Didymos - a singular organism expressed by a duo merged into a magnificent single obsession - the practical and effective openness generates an expansion of possibilities that find in doubt and its continuous amplification, a subsequent opportunity to proceed. He shares Didymos. And he doesn't do it for a need of knowledge transmission, formative and necessary too, but for an exchange that is multidisciplinary and transgenerational biological breathe. And to consider paths that undertaken alone are otherwise difficult to identify first and then walkable. The project explores the fundamental heritage contained in the Didymos archives and creates a choral and participatory platform focused on the work and on what is necessary to make it independent and powerful, labile but usable at the same time. Real presence in the exhibition space is the construction of the work and the delicate phase of habitation of this need for the right moment, magical and ungovernable, which in order to be realized draws on the digging of the visual lexicon of Contemporary Art, with all its contradictions and fragility. Defying conventions and observing the world around us from an oblique and personal perspective, Didymos favours the spheres of climate change, of relative thought, of a vision of a physical and mental landscape that is more suitable for man and the other creatures that inhabit the earth. Didymos'art questions the dynamics that contribute to the creation of altruistic subjectivities in a world blinded by narcissistic superior and therefore devastating interests, questioning their certainties and offering an alternative reality to the present one. In an international social context in which economic and social disparities grow out of all proportion, in which physical and metaphorical walls are erected beyond the other must always remain at a safe distance, in which regurgitations of "isms" pollute the political and social scenario, the work of the Artists remains the avant-garde bulwark for its innate capacity to create imagery and open up new horizons of reflection. This is what Didymos intends to do: projecting their vision as active artists on the contemporary scene, often clashing with the themes of indignation, inclusion, climate, and social equity. Their installations are an imperfect example, for this necessary, of the critical use of stereotypes of fruition and mass culture in the work of art to create alternative narratives. And the process is discarded through a talented and studied ability to govern the materials used and the equipment - a little alchemist's and a little fitter's - that undergoes a constant state of stress: paper, graphite, wax, wood, metal, gesture that acts, stone, spring, magnet, plastic, analogical and digital technology, word, cut, overhang, gold leaf, glass, springs, twine. And not only that. There isn't a predetermined and unilateral direction but just the perception. A perception that in the contemporary practice of Art can be achieved only through apparent lightness, discussion and involvement. The author, in drama and in literature, knows how to capture these elements in the highlights of the tragedy. It is the ability to fly over the certitude left to itself, and to disappear - or to camouflage, or to hide - in the doubt. The doubt in Didymos assumes centrality as an object of representation and analysis. As an effect of discursive and visual compositions, it marks in a decisive way the radical contemporaneity of its entire work. It is a matter of living, not without pebbles inside the shoes, places of crisis and resistance. The communication, the language and the information that the work carries with it are expressed through a continuous experiment within and against the representation itself, within and against the language for its own sake. It goes without saying that Didymos'goal is not just to denounce but to be the poetic centre of an enlarged and better vision of the world. A centre that doesn't claim to provide solutions but claims its own personal appearance as the presence of the artist and of being an artist. And this happens through works-analysis that tells us of how physical and mental territories, geographically and existentially can be reconstructed in the generous offer provided primarily by the design and then by the installation of the work. |
